What are the different types of Headlights?

Headlights

Seeing where you are going is important for your safety.  When it is time to replace your headlights you want to make sure you get the right replacement headlights.    If you are looking for brighter lights or trying to be more energy efficient, there are different choices to meet requirements.

The three main types of headlights are: LED, HID or ‘xenon’, and halogen.

Halogen headlights

Halogen headlights have been the standard for many years and are still the most common headlight in use today. They are affordable, last a long time, and are easy to replace. However, they are not as energy efficient as LED and HID headlights and tend to generate excess heat.

LED headlights

Light emitting diode (LED) headlights are relatively new to the scene.  Unlike Halogen and HID lights, LED lights generate almost no heat and their low energy requirements help preserve your Car’s battery.  They are more expensive than regular halogen headlights.

HID headlights (Xenons)

High intensity discharge (HID) headlights - also called ‘xenons’ after the gas used in them - are known for their brightness. They can be up to three times brighter than the average halogen light. HID headlights use less energy than halogen lights and have a long lifespan.   They are more expensive than halogen headlights.

Which is the best type of headlight?

If you do a lot of night driving, HID headlights are going to be the brightest for you. If you’re sticking to a budget, halogen lights are going to be the most cost effective option. LED lights may interest anyone looking to lower their emissions without sacrificing on brightness.

Other options -

Another option to headlight replacement is headlight restoration.  Over time headlights have a tendency to go from crystal clear to yellow and/or cloudy.  Our technicians can restore the headlight lenses so that they are clear again which increases the brightness of your headlights and improve visibility.
